HEAVYWEIGHT HITS: BOXING SCORES ONE-TWO PUNCH AT THE BOX OFFICE
Vintage June 14, 1977 issue of Time Magazine features Sylvester Stallone wearing Rocky’s black and gold boxing trunks and heavyweight championship belt as he appeared in Rocky III, along with real-life boxer Gerry Cooney, set for his match with Larry Holmes in Las Vegas.
The feature article on Sylvester Stallone and Rocky III is entitled “Winner and Still Champion: Rocky III is a box-office knockout and a homecoming for Sly Stallone”.
It discusses the original plans for the movie’s final fight – set to take place in the Roman Colosseum, with the match against a Russian (instead of Clubber Lang); Stallone’s dramatically chiseled body and how he got it; and Sly’s audition of boxer Earnie Shavers, who fought Ali and KO’d Ken Norton. “The man practically beat me to death,” Sly explains. “The instincts of the ring took over, and he had trouble pulling his punches. He hit me on the arm so hard that my elbow knocked the wind out of me. I machoed it out all the way into the men’s room before I threw up.”
The piece includes several full color photos; a Rocky III cast portrait, an action shot of Rocky pummeling Clubber Lang, a very rare photo of Rocky hugging Adrian after the fight, a behind the scenes shot in the ring, and a candid photo of Stallone sailing on the Pacific with then-wife Sasha Stallone.
82-page magazine is in good condition. Small black mark appears on Stallone’s arm on the front cover (please see images of magazine.)
